So apparently Groups that advocate for people with disabilities are asking us to boycott the Ben stiller movie “tropic thunder” over the word retarded…..
Aimee Keegan, public relations manager for AHRC Nassau, said any use of the word is "hate speech."
Writer Jenna Glatzer, 32, of Islip, remembers the day when her younger brother, Paul, who has Down syndrome and is now 29, asked her a heartbreaking question.
"He came to me when he was maybe 9 or 10 years old and asked me, 'What does "retard" mean?'" Glatzer said. "Just off the cuff, I said, 'It's short for "really terrific."' ... It was terrible to hear it coming from his mouth. He understood there was something wrong with the word and it was about him." www.newsday.com
First of all that’s…well that’s just plain retarded. For one lady you’re a liar, the word retarded doesn’t mean terrific it means: slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/retarded)
As in “damn it took you ten minutes to count to five you’re a retard.”
Secondly, “retard is hate speech” what!? Actually I won’t dispute that, honestly if something offends you it offends you I can’t argue. I’m pretty sure some people find kittens, candy, and Jesus offensive… sooo to each his own…I guess.
My main problem is this.. Why make such a big deal? The only thing you’re doing is giving “tropic thunder” free advertisement…hell all this controversy makes me want to see it even more..Plus I’m pretty sure no retarded people were hurt during the filming of tropic thunder. So please just sit the hell down retard..…

Altough I won't want anyone calling my retarded child a retard. I have to agree with you. If people stop mnaking a big deal over everything in life then the world wouldn't be so damn skrewed up
well...what can you do
LMBAO! I appreciate you expressing my exact sentiments. It's been pissing me off to have to hear about this for the last 3 days.
It is so sad that all of you have missed the point about this issue. It's the fact that this word is used so casually, with out regard to it's demoralizing affect on people who were historically institutionalized for just being born different. All of you are the reason this world is so screwed up. Because you won't take a stand on a moral issue that is just plain simple - you don't pick on innocent, harmless people, who just want to be treated with dignity and respect. You wouldn't throw the "n" word around, or the "s" word around a Hispanic because you know you would get a beating...so why would you use the "r" word? what the hell makes you so insensitive????
I actually have to agree with Javi, it is giving the movie more publicity. And the woman's story of why she wants to ban the word is "retarded" any word used to put someone down can be offensive. If the word is intentionally used to describe someone who is developmentally challenged than it's wrong. The word means to lag behind. But I guess we're more sensitive about something if it affects us.
